IMF WANTS TURKEY

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said that Turkey was the most powerful candidate for the Board of Directors. Kahn said that Turkish economy recovered quickly from the global financial crisis. He said that Turkey was expected to reach a growth rate of 7.5-8 percent by the end of 2010, adding that there was no need to concern about the next year.

Istanbul Auto Show will begin on October 29. More than 200 companies are taking part in this year's show. They will have the chance to promote their new products to the world.

TURKEY'S RENEWED JUDGES AND PROSECUTORS BOARD SET TO HOLD FIRST MEETING

Turkey's Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors, a key body which appoints judges and prosecutors, is set to hold its maiden meeting on Monday after it has been overhauled as part of a EU-inspired constitutional reform package. The HSYK is set to devise a road map to solve chronic issues of the legal system in Turkey and to ease the work load of the country's courts. In its first meeting the board is expected to elect its deputy chairperson. The board has 22 full members who are set to meet in Ankara.

CHP INSINCERE OVER HEADSCARF ISSUE, FORMER CHP FIGURE SAYS

A former high profile member of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) has said the party was not sincere in its efforts to solve the headscarf issue. "We were encouraged by the CHP's new discourse that some things could be changed but we were disappointed," Inal Batu, CHP's former deputy chairperson, told the daily ZAMAN.

TURKEY BEST CANDIDATE FOR SEAT IN IMF BOARD, FUND'S HEAD SAYS

President of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn said Turkey is the closest candidate to get a seat at IMF's Board of Directors. "Everyone thinks that Turkey is the best candidate for the Board of Directors. And that is reasonable for me, too," Strauss-Kahn said. European countries had agreed during a summit meeting of the G20 to reduce their representation at table by leaving 2 spots to developing countries.

GREEK NEWSPAPER SAYS TURKEY, GREECE CLOSE TO SOLUTION IN AEGEAN

Greek daily Katimerini has said that Turkey and Greece were close to seal a settlement of their dispute in the Aegean. The newspaper said the agreement included provisions that Greece's territorial waters would be extended to 12 miles in certain areas.

The General Electric Co., a giant company in the USA, promoted its new product developed by Turkish principal engineer Mehmet Arik. The prototype LED bulb incorporates jet-engine cooling techniques to cast as much light as a 100-watt halogen lamp while using one-third as much energy. 41-year-old Arik, who graduated from Istanbul Technical University Department of Mechanical Engineering, has made many inventions in the United States.

LEVEY SAYS TURKEY SHOULD NOT BE A GUARANTEE FOR IRAN

U.S. Under Secretary of Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey has indicated that Ankara should abide by the sanction imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council. Levey also criticized the government officials for making remarks that trade volume with Iran would be increased. He said that Iran considered Turkey as a safety valve against the pressure of the world.

EU ASKS CHP TO SEND AN EXPERT TO BRUSSELS

Leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Kemal Kilicdaroglu has said that European Union Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule asked him to send experts to Brussels to inform the Union during their meeting. "Suheyl Batum will go to Brussels to inform European Union officials," he said. "Turkey has faced a shift of axis after the recent changes in the judiciary. These developments indicate that we are moving away from the European Union," Kilicdaroglu added.

VICTIMS OF 1980 MILITARY COUP SEEKING COMPENSATION

A ruling by Turkey's Constitutional Court that ordered to restore employee personal rights and redeem salaries of the civil servants, who were sacked by after a coup d'etat in 1980 in the country, has raised hopes for coup victims to appeal to the courts for compensation. Civil servants who lost their jobs back then included many scholars as well.

John Peet, the Europe editor at the British weekly The Economist, has said a recent referendum on a raft of government-backed constitutional amendments had seemed to divide the country, adding, however that stability had now a strong foothold in the country. "Turkey was the sick man of Europe, but now it has become one of the fastest growing economies of the world," Peet said. The Economist has published an extensive report on Turkey, likening the country to "a new China in Europe."

MAIN OPPOSITION LEADER CRITICIZES GUL OVER APPOINTMENTS TO HIGHER BOARD

Chairman of the main opposition Republican People's Party Kemal Kilicdaroglu has criticized Turkish President Abdullah Gul over his selection of four members of the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors, a key body which appoints judges and prosecutors. "Mr President failed to act ethically in a manifestation of clientelism when he chose head of Kayseri's bar association as one of the four members of the board," Kilicdaroglu said. The central Anatolian city of Kayseri is the hometown of the Turkish president. "We have raised our hopes after a speech he delivered at the parliament, but his choice left us disappointed," Kilicdaroglu said.

TRADE CHAMBER HEAD REJECTS CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS

Head of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) Murat Yalcintas has defied allegations that he had bribed senior judges in a legal dispute with an Istanbul-based fair organization company. "Allegations are absolutely false that I have ordered the bribery," Yalcintas was quoted by his lawyers as telling his interrogators on Sunday. The chamber head returned to Turkey from the United States on Saturday when allegations that several judges have been bribed surfaced after an anonymous tip-off regarding a lawsuit the ITO filed against CNR Fair Organization to annul several rental contracts between the fair organization and the trade chamber.

"MAVI MARMARA WAS ON ITS WAY TO EGYPT"

It was revealed that there was a breathtaking diplomacy among Turkey, the United States and Israel three days before the attack on a six-ship flotilla led by "Mavi Marmara". The chairman of Turkey's National Intelligence Agency (MIT) called the chairman of Egyptian Intelligence Agency and asked him to allow the flotilla to cast anchor in the port city of al-Arish. Egypt accepted it. The United States informed Israel on the decision. Israel asked the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to confirm it. While the ships were on their way to Egypt, Israeli fleet contacted them and asked about their destination. Those who were on board the ships said that they were heading to Gaza. Things got out of control and the attack resulted in killing of nine people.

KAHN SAYS TURKEY IS A GOOD CANDIDATE

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said everyone agreed that Turkey was a good candidate for the Board of Directors. During the G-20 meeting in South Korea, ministers agreed on a serious of changes aiming to increase the influence of the IMF on the world economy and to give emerging market countries more power in the Fund. Kahn said that it was the biggest reform in the history of the Fund.

EXTENSIVE SOLUTION OF TURKISH-GREEK DISPUTE IN AEGEAN CLOSE, NEWSPAPER SAYS

Turkish and Greek prime minister have agreed in principle on a solution that would end a long-standing dispute between the two countries over the territorial waters in the Aegean, several Greek newspapers said on Sunday. Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Greek counterpart George Papandreou reached to an accord over some basic issues during a visit of the Turkish premier in Athens last week for summit meeting on climate change in the Mediterranean. "The two neighbors are very close to solution," To Vima wrote, while Te Nea said, "progress has been made in a defining code of conduct that will prevent dogfights." According to Katimerini the two leaders have agreed over "a scenario which will see Greece extending its territorial waters to 12 miles in the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean but limiting it to six to ten miles for the Greek islands in the Aegean."

COOPERATION SUSPENDED BETWEEN TURKISH, ISRAELI INTELLIGENCE SERVICES

Cooperation between Turkey's National Intelligence Organization and Israel's MOSSAD has been cut off due to heightened tensions between the two countries after Israel's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla. The two agencies have stopped intelligence sharing and joint operations.
