"Regional countries are capable of defusing the current crisis without the interference of foreign forces," Ahmadinejad said in a Tuesday meeting with visiting Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.

His remarks came shortly after the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer had said earlier in the day that the alliance has a strong desire for deeper ties with Georgia in light of the recent conflict in South Ossetia.

"The process of NATO enlargement will continue," said Scheffer.

The conflict between Moscow and Tbilisi, which began after Georgia's military offensive into the de-facto region of South Ossetia, resulted in the loss of 2,000 lives and the displacement of 40,000 people.

Russia says the US orchestrated the crisis in the Caucasus and gave the green light to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to carry out the assault against South Ossetians.

In his strong message of support for Georgia, Scheffer signaled that 'the road to NATO is still wide open' for Georgia.

President Ahmadinejad, however, warned that a military pact between the NATO and Georgia would only simmer tensions in the volatile Caucasus.

The Armenian Foreign Minister, for his part, confirmed Ahmadinejad's assertion that the recent development in the region has highlighted the need for closer cooperation among regional countries.

In an earlier meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Nalbandian warned certain countries against interfering in regional affairs.
